The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Ethiopia hosted a special Moroccan Cuisine Week celebration at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa on July 26, 2024. The event, attended by high-ranking officials from the embassy, the Ethiopian government, diplomats, and invited community and religious leaders, aimed to highlight Moroccan cultural heritage’s rich and diverse flavors and strengthen diplomatic relations with Ethiopia and beyond. Organized to promote cultural exchange and culinary tourism, the celebration saw participation from Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism officials, Women and Social Affairs, the Inter-religious Council, and various embassies and consular delegates in Addis Ababa, further cementing their ties.

In Her speech, the Ambassador of the kingdom of Morocco to Ethiopia and Djibouti, Her Excellency Nezha Alaoui M’hammdi, emphasized the program’s aim, goal, and mission. Her Excellency Ambassador of Morocco stated, “Our aim with this Moroccan Cuisine Week is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Moroccan culture through our rich culinary heritage. The goal is to create a platform for cultural exchange that strengthens the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Ethiopia. The mission of this program is to celebrate the diversity of our traditions and promote culinary tourism, which can serve as a bridge between our nations.”

Culinary Delights and Cultural Exchange

The state dinner featured traditional Moroccan breads such as msemmen and khobz. The buffet boasted an impressive spread of authentic Moroccan dishes, including:

  • Tagine of chicken with preserved lemon and olives
  • Lamb kefta (meatballs) in spiced tomato sauce
  • Vegetable couscous with raisins and nuts
  • Zaalouk (eggplant salad)
  • An assortment of Moroccan salads and other spicy dishes

Beverage options included Moroccan wines and traditional cocktails, adding to the authentic culinary experience.

A troupe of Moroccan musicians performed live cultural shows and dances. Similarly, the Ambassador and representatives of the African Union shared this thought: “The Moroccan Cuisine Week is a brilliant initiative highlighting the importance of cultural diplomacy. It is wonderful to see such a rich cultural exchange between our two countries.”

A local businesswoman added, “The food, music, and atmosphere were incredible. I felt like I was transported to Morocco for a night. This experience has piqued my interest in visiting Morocco.”
